Artists responding to artists
7 April 2024 - 7 May 2022
Bartley & Company Art is pleased to release three unique prints by André Hemer responding to the famous Rita Angus painting Cass currently showing at Te Papa.

The painting is owned by Christchurch Art Gallery and in 2012 when the gallery was closed following the earthquake, the gallery asked Hemer to respond to the work once voted New Zealand\'s greatest painting.

With the then inaccessibility of the original painting, curator Felicity Milburn said the installation Hemer created examined the constantly multiplying presence of Cass in the virtual world by sampling the many and varied images available through a Google image search for the work.

"Hemer\'s exhibition presents us with a question: do the countless copies and versions of Cass that exist simultaneously across old and new media dilute the importance of the original - or do they reinforce it?" Milburn asked.

In the emerging NFT world, the questions are more relevant than ever.

Alongside, Hemer’s prints we have paintings by Gavin Hurley and Sam Mitchell which take their artist predecessors as their subject.
