Bartley & Company Art is pleased to present a tightly curated exhibition of work by three painters who explore the materiality of painting and its links to the world via suggestion rather than representation - ideas around three-dimensionality, in-betweenness, transparency, edges, slipperiness, mobility.

All three artists have a deep understanding and knowledge of their medium. All three are interested in exploring and pushing at the boundaries of what paint, and painting, can do. Coleman challenges the notion that a painting is a static object; Le Lievre choreographs paint and lets it perform to create a seductive space for contemplation, meditation, reflection; Parkes, avoiding the usual expectation that a painting is flat, pushes into the terrain of sculpture.

In the work of these three masterful painters, the viscerally of paint is foregrounded. The artists though remain in the driver’s seat, underpinning that physicality with an intellectual engagement with art history that takes the work beyond the purely visual. There’s a sense of playing, having fun, creating pleasure.
