Cora-Allan Wickliffe is a multi-disciplinary artist of Maori and Niuean descent. A contemporary practitioner of the Niuean tradition of barkcloth known as hiapo, she is credited with reviving the "sleeping artform" which has not been practised in Niue for several generations. Her hiapo pieces in this exhibition deconstruct and reconstruct the decorative elements of the traditional form - delicate botanical drawings and abstract patterns - to create a contemporary interpretation. Wickliffe is currently the artist in residence at Te Whare Hera Massey University Wellington and her work is featured in the Autumn 2021 issue of Art New Zealand. She won the Pacific Heritage Artist Award in the 2020 Creative New Zealand Arts Pasifika Award, a 2021 McCahon House artist residence which she will undertake from September- December. Announcing that award, McCahon House said she was chosen for the way she "weaves together and embraces history, contemporary thought and personal exploration along with form, representation and symbolic imagery".
